Our team in India have been busy with events recently, starting with their first ever networking dinner, which was held on 21 July at FAVA restaurant in Bangalore.

Attended by IET Past President Professor John Loughhead, the evening featured a presentation on IET India’s activities by Country Head, India Shekhar Sanyal.

Guests included representatives from Dell, the Institution of Engineers India, DRDO, ISRO, Rolls-Royce, Boeing, TEREX, Cable & Wireless and Atkins Global.

Later, on 29 July, the IET’s Young Professionals Coordination Team (YPCT) and a number of Young Professionals (YPs) gathered for a meeting in Pune in western India.

Members of the YPCT and 22 YPs from different Local Networks in the South Asia region including Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, New Delhi and Sri Lanka took part in this forum.

As the day progressed, the YPs were divided into focus groups for brainstorming sessions on how to create activities to engage existing YPs and attract new members.

YPCT Chair Dr Sam McLaughlin said: “It was great to share this experience with so many enthusiastic Young Professionals, ready and willing to take responsibility for actions to bring about positive change.”Discussions were also held regarding YPCT succession planning and the agenda for the 2011 YP Summit.

The following day, and still in Pune, the Asia Pacific finals of the IET’s Present Around The World (PATW) competition were held in India for the first time.

Young engineers from seven countries in the region including Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka were involved, with Isyrah Fahmi Osman from Brunei named as the regional winner and Hou Zhao Qi of Singapore emerging as the runner up.

The judges were impressed with Isyrah Fahmi Osman’s unique topic of designing a robot which could solve the Rubik’s cube, and described his presentation as “well prepared” and “confidently delivered”.

He will now represent Asia Pacific at the international PATW finals, to be held in the UK in November 2010
