Nigel Fine, Chief Executive of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) visited China and met with top leaders from Chinese state key universities, professional intuitions and government agencies from 22 to 23 in June. IET was applauded for its key role for to promote professional excellence in the country.

Nigel Fine said the IET plays a key role in UK to assure professional excellence from academic accreditation, training provide endorsement, employer accreditation and professional registration. IET is a professional home for life for all of its members. China is now experience a transition from a manufacture base to a knowledge and innovative base, the IET registered Chinese engineers could be well recognized internationally for their professional excellence.
BUPT is the 1st Chinese university whose programs passed the IET academic accreditation. Professor Yinghai ZHANG, Vice President of BUPT said students graduated from the accredited program enjoyed a high-quality education with international benchmark which helped them employment and further master study abroad significantly. Professor Zhang was also impressed with IET cooperation proposals.
Professor Feng CHEN, Vice President of Beijing Jiaotong University, another key university listed on the nation’s 211 program said his university would like to start a pilot project to send its international school students to join the IET as a way to broaden their vision sphere concerning international engineering environment and to build world recognized professional competence, which could a door for all-round cooperation between the IET and the Unvierstity.
Tsinghua University and Peking University are China’s Oxford University and Cambridge University. Professor Min YONG, Head of Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University and Professor Shiyi CHEN, Dean of College of Engineering, Peking University attended another meeting with Nigel. Both professors though highly of IET contribution concerning professional excellence, believed the IET could improve students’ employment and facilitate their university’s ambition to become world-renowned ones.
Both Mr. Ming LU, Deputy Director General of SAFEA and Mr. Rulin LIU, Vice President and Secretary General of CIE showed strong interest toward the IET’s training program featured on professional excellence.
As the top Chinese consulting organization, CAE provides consultation to China State Council regarding professional development of engineering professionals and education of engineering students in universities. Mr. Yuhen PAN, Executive Vice President of CAE said: “There is a huge pool of engineers in China, and no matter they work at home or abroad, they can benefit enormously from the IET. China would like to re-train 100,000 selected engineers to make them more innovative, and I am looking forward the IET to contributing more concerning professional excellence.”
CACEE is in charge of continuous education of 46.8 million professionals including 5.3 million engineering professionals in China Mr. Guanqian DAI, President of CACEE and former Minister of Personnel said “IET’s professional home for life gives me a lot of inspiration and CACEE also needs to keep an eye on building a long term relationship with members”. Both sides look forward a solid cooperation in the future and professional excellence training could be a good starting point.
During his stay in China, Nigel also met with members from the IET Beijing Local Network. Nigel reiterated IET’s commitment in promoting knowledge sharing and professional excellence in China, and encouraged members to be more active and to contribute more to the IET’s development in China.
