On October 22, with the help of IET YMS in BUPT, Professor Andy held the English Speech Competition of BUPT/QM Joint Program. After the assessment of competitors’ speech and PPT, eight competitors stand out of the crowd. The competition contains prepared speech part and question-and-answer part. Competitors were asked to expound their opinions with the topic of how are sustainability and Environmental Concerns addressed in Mobile Communications Industry. During the competition, judges as well as audiences were shocked by the fluent spoken-English, nimble thought and skillful speech of every competitor.

Our team in India have been busy with events recently, starting with their first ever networking dinner, which was held on 21 July at FAVA restaurant in Bangalore.

Nigel Fine, Chief Executive of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) visited China and met with top leaders from Chinese state key universities, professional intuitions and government agencies from 22 to 23 in June. IET was applauded for its key role for to promote professional excellence in the country.

制造业是国民经济的物质基础和产业主体，是一个国家科技水平和综合实力的重要标志，因此，人类社会的发展离不开制造业的发展与进步。随着信息时代的到来，以及气候变化逐步成为全球可持续发展面临的最严峻挑战之一，研究、探讨、应用先进制造技术逐步为各国政府、科研机构以及企业界所关注。

数字化的世界不是在扩张，而是在爆炸式的发展。目前的信息技术在容量和性能方面的发展至少受到三个方面的阻碍：1) 能量效率，2) 带宽密度，和 3) 成本。到2018年，用来在互联网上传输信息的能量预计将超过发达国家生产的总电量的10%。并行计算是解决信息处理中能量效率问题的可接受方案，但是带宽密度的瓶颈仍然广泛存在于从云网络到芯片间互连的整个互连结构中。因此，光通信通过增加人、地域、和系统间的相互连接和信息传输，将继续在促进社会发展中起到更为关键的作用。硅基光电子学与光通信的结合，正在使下述服务成为可能：全球多媒体接入，无处不在的通信、计算和成像，实现“全球本土化”的“实时”传输，具有“时刻意识”、自我管理、自我恢复、和最优能量效率结构的学习体系，及先进集成平台和大批量生产的开发。然而，随着“硅基光电子学”在实际应用方面的体现，它本身的可持续性、科学性、以及今后20年的发展方向也被提到了桌面上。本研讨会的目的正是为该领域的国际知名专家们提供一个展示和讨论前瞻性观点和建议的平台。

2010年6月11日14：00，“IET英语演讲竞赛北京赛区—北京交通大学站”初赛在北京交通大学机械工程楼一层多功能厅成功举办。本次竞赛由英国工程技术学会（IET）北京代表处主办，IET青年分会、北京交通大学研究生会和计算机与信息技术学院研究生会联合承办。担任本次初赛的评委有北京交通大学土建学院项彦勇教授、计算机学院岑翼刚老师、何永忠老师以及计算机学院在读博士生Jesse。此外，IET（北京）会员及本地分会主管张倩倩女士也出席初赛现场。

“IET环球演讲竞赛” (Present Around the World)是由IET青年会员分部（YP）组织的每年一次的英语演讲比赛，主要的目的是提高工程及科技领域的学生和年轻科技工作者的英语演讲能力。获胜者赢取由IET提供的奖学金。

IET International Conference on Wireless Sensor Network Application

2010年1月26日，IET2010年新年晚宴在国宾酒店举行，来自能源，机械，工程等领域合作单位的120位代表参加了晚宴。其中，中国科学技术学会书记处书记，IET资深院士冯长根先生致开幕词。

The Advanced Forum on Transportation of China, organized by Beijing Jiaotong University and co-sponsored by the IET was successfully held on 17^th October 2009. This event has established itself as an excellent Chinese meeting for both transportation officials and scholars. Since originated in 2005, it has provided a platform for experts from government, research institutes, colleges and universities, etc. to exchange views and experiences about recent developments and future directions. The Forum has showcased discussions in enhancing integrated transportation theory and systematic transportation theory exploration, building integrated transportation system, advancing reform of the management system in transport field, improving integrated management system, optimizing general layout of transportation system, strengthening infrastructure of transportation junctions, coordinating the relationship between national energy strategy and transportation development strategy, highlighting the importance of environmental protection, prompting Eco-transportation, and setting up relevant guarantee system.

From 23 to 24 October, 2009, IET Chief Executive and Secretary Nigel Fine visited IET Beijing office. During his trip, great progress between partnerships has been made. He had a regular meeting with China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and signed partnership contract with Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES).
